What happens when you stop trying to make one good piece and just start making?

A lot.

This five-day workshop is about momentum, repetition, curiosity, and getting out of your own way. We will work quickly, make a lot, try things, ruin things, cover things up, tear them apart, and put them back together. The goal is not to create 100 finished works—and definitely not 100 masterpieces. The goal is to make enough work that something begins to happen.

A color keeps showing up. A shape repeats. A material starts asking for more attention. You begin to see what you are actually interested in—not what you think you should be doing.

We will begin by pushing forward: making without overthinking, working on several pieces at once, and letting one thing lead to another. Then we will dig deeper. We will slow down, look at what has emerged, and begin to follow the ideas, materials, and questions that have energy.

This is a visceral, material-driven workshop. We will layer, scrape, draw, paint, tear, stitch, print, cover, uncover, and respond to what is happening on the surface. There will be demonstrations, prompts, individual conversations, group discussions, and plenty of time to work.

Materials are central to the experience. We will move between drawing, painting, printing, collage, and mixed-media processes, using acrylic paint, drawing oils and pigment sticks, markers, graphite, charcoal, ink, paper, and collage tools. Participants are encouraged to bring materials they already love—as well as a few they may not know what to do with yet. The materials are not just supplies. They are part of how we find out what the work wants to become.

The emphasis is on process over product—not forcing an outcome or knowing exactly where you are going. Just showing up, making a lot of work, and seeing what opens up.

Testimonials

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Lisa’s class was the spark I needed to revive my art practice. She created a space for experimentation, safety and lightheartedness that allowed, at times, for the work to flow from me. I finished with pieces that came from somewhere inside that I did not recognize. It is all about material, a sense of freedom, and self-discovery — a wonderful journey.”

-A.F.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I’ve never given myself so much time and space to explore materials and techniques. I worked at a frenetic pace and cranked out 99(!) works by the time we wrapped on Sunday. Now I’m excited to take some of the ideas we talked about and be more intentional about implementing them and incorporating them into my collage work."
