Process

Six + Six x Two takes creative energy onto the production line. Working at a steady pace this workshop is an exercise in: composition, design, editing, orientation and, visual rhythm.

The first

set of six panels is approached quietly.

Participants simplify the creative process through a disciplined and focused layering

method. Engaging in subtlety, balance and refined surfaces.

The second

set of six panels shifts direction.

Using simultaneous layering of our paper and paint materials. Participants move into a more energetic and instinctive process. Embracing speed, momentum, improvisation and, a freer visual interaction.

Formats

The grouping of 2- sets of 6+6 panels presents a pivotal opportunity to discover how panels communicate with one another. You determine the the final orientation and visual dialog of your panels via formats such as: Diptychs, Linear installations, Triptychs, Stacked or Vertical arrangements.

Minimal or Complex/ Quiet or Active.

The final conversation between the panels is your call.

AbD ( Abstraction by Design)

The Abstraction by Design method is the process of exploring collage & painting techniques by layering paper and paint on panels.

The layering of paper and paint enables us to sand, scrape, wet, peel, paint, collage and repeat to create controlled and incidental textured surfaces. We use water base polyurethane as a glue to attach papers, as a resist coat, and as a top coat as well.

Collaging involves color selection, paper choices, placement, glueing, mark making, composition and surface extraction.

Painting involves panel prep, trowel application, brushing, sanding, surface manipulations, paint mixing and texturing.

A.R.R. (Action.Review.Reaction)

We begin the AbD process with an action by applying paint or collage to our panels.

We pause and review the action, then respond with another action.

This requires taking time to observe your work, measure your response to both the controlled(deliberate) and spontaneous (incidents/happy accidents ). We follow the A.R.R principles as we create your work.
