In this workshop, I will suggest supplies and offer techniques to help you create paintings in acrylic that are so easily blended that they might be mistaken for a photograph. I learned to use acrylic paint to blend like oil, using a certain kind of paint, and the key ingredient: retarder. Have your images chosen and ready to paint before the workshop. Make sure your reference is clear and in focus. Try to task your own photos; what interests you and what are you wanting to convey?
Please don’t use lead pencil or charcoal, either use acrylic washes or pastel pencils to lay in the image to be painted. I would recommend staying away from portraits, as they can be frustrating while learning a new technique. I highly recommend The Masterson Palette, a fine mister and Golden Retarder. A palette knife and the most potent yellow are also needed. I use either Cadmium Yellow Medium or Benzimidazolone Yellow from Golden. I think they make the most consistent paints. If you can afford to try their Golden Fluid Acrylics, I like those best. The one ounce size is fine. Feel free to bring all of your supplies and we will determine what works.
