Course Overview

Immerse yourself in three days of vibrant creativity guided by seasoned instructor Vicki Lee. This dynamic workshop is designed for both newcomers to gel printing and those eager to refine their skills. Participants will embark on an artistic journey, progressing from fundamental techniques to advanced mixed-media enhancements.

Workshop Projects

Complete three full projects, each highlighting the expressive possibilities of Gelli printing. The projects include creating three small panels with resin, one larger panel with resin, and collage totems in varying sizes. Participants will learn to build layers, experiment with pattern and texture, and bring their own unique flair to each piece.

Techniques and Materials

The workshop includes hands-on instruction in using resin to transform Gelli prints into luminous, gallery-worthy artworks. By applying a glossy resin layer, participants will discover how to add depth, vibrancy, and a professional finish to their paintings. The course will cover different types of acrylic paint and various papers suitable for Gelli printing. The use of stencils, magazine images, and mark-making tools will also be featured, offering a wide range of creative possibilities.

Gelli Plate Supply List

The basic supplies that you will need to bring include:

Gelli plate by Gelli Arts Brand sized 8x10.

The 8x10 plate is the perfect size for learning. You may choose to bring two plates to work on simultaneously. Both may be 8x10, or another useful size is 6x6. If you already own other sizes, such as 9x12 or 12x14, those are perfect for this class as well. I do prefer the Gelli Arts Brand.

Rubber Brayer

The Speedball 4-inch rubber brayer is preferred.

Printing Paper

The best paper for learning and practicing is 24-pound copy paper sized 8 ½ x 11. The lighter 20-pound paper works as well, but I prefer the heavier weight. Other papers that work include rice papers and smooth printing type papers.

Tissue Paper

The Carnival Wet Strength Tissue Paper is a necessity. A supply of cheaper wrapping paper tissue is also used. The tissue papers will be used as collage material.

Paints

I prefer the Liquitex Basics Brand of Acrylic paint. Other brands I use include Amsterdam and Golden Fluid Acrylics. A variety of at least 12 colors, including black and white, is preferred. While they can be used straight from the tube, you will find that mixing colors may yield a stronger composition. I love the transparent colors in the Golden Fluid Acrylics as they provide excellent mixing and tinting options.

Stencils

The personality of your prints will emerge from the stencils used. I suggest you have at least 5-10 stencils that include geometric shapes and circles, letters and numbers, abstract shapes, floral shapes, mid-century shapes, etc. We will also hand-cut stencils from index paper or cardboard. The stencil selection at Stencilgirl.com is excellent for all these types. Sizes include 9x12, which is the best for the 8x10 plate. Amazon also has inexpensive packs of stencils, mainly 6x6 or 8x8 inches, which will prove helpful for enhancing the larger stencils, and they work nicely on the 6x6 inch plate.

Wooden panels for mounting the prints that you will provide

I use the Da Vinci Pro smooth panels, 2 inches in depth, for my small pieces, either 5x5 or 6x6. I typically create a series of between 3 and 6 mounted pieces from the prints made in the same session. The panels can be bought separately but are usually purchased in a box of 6. I source my supplies from Jerry's Artarama.com or Dickblick.com, although Amazon also carries them. You will need at least 3 of these, but I advise having more panels handy in case you wish to extend the series to 6.

We will also collage one larger wooden panel. I recommend the same brand, up to a panel sized 16x16.

Other supplies you need include:

Matte Medium, I prefer Golden

Sponge brushes, about 5 3-inch sponge brushes

Palette knife and Palette paper for mixing paints

Scissors, Several Craft knives, a 12 or 18-inch ruler, and a cutting mat

Drawing pencils, markers, interesting mark making tools

High fashion and style magazines such as Vogue, Bazaar, etc. for magazine image

transfer (if you have them)

Gloves

Baby wipes for plate cleaning

Supplies I will provide include:

3 24-inch totems of varying widths (these will not be resin coated) only matte coated.

Art Resin for the small panels and the large panel
